This article describes how to handle an intern who is only in a program for a year or two (e.g. a PGY 1 Plastics resident who is currently in General Surgery).

Residents who have a defined categorical spot in a surgical subspecialty but are currently administratively part of General Surgery (e.g. during their PGY1 year) can have an account created within the General Surgery program.  Their user type should be "Designated Preliminary" resident.  When they move over to being administratively part of their destination program then their account can be migrated to the new program and their resident type can be changed to categorical.  This will typically be needed at the end of the academic year.
